This is a distorted intro based on the Battlefield 3 intro made by EA DICE. I included the EA/DICE logos for reference only. The background sound comes from the official intro video when starting the game (consoles) or loading the Campaign (PC).

Thank you, dude! I do not work for EA DICE, although I’d very much like to… I did everything alone, analyzing the original and it ended up like this after a great amount of attempts.

Could you please further explain how to do the “glow effect”? It is a little confusing because even though I add those filters it still doesn’t have that square look to it. Also is that on the previous “dust” layer or is it a new layer or is it an entirely new composition? Please reply because I’m getting really stuck at this part.

For the “square” look, I have it’s own layer set as bottom layer. The effect is Turbulent Noise with Fractial Type “Basis” and Noise Type “Block”. Contrast is set from 25 to 300 at different times. I used keyframes for that. And the opacity is set to 25%.

      Hope that helped!

It helps a little bit. Are the squares their own layer with the turbulent noise and fractial type and noise on top of that or are they generated in After effects?

It’s an own layer. The squares you see are the Turbulent Noise effect. Then there are settings for Turbulent Noise, and that’s where the Fractal Type should be “Basis” etc.

That would unfortunately take a lifetime to make. It took me very long to achieve this intro, and this is only a short brief on how I did this.

I guess Final Cut might be an equivalent app aside from After Effects. Technically, it’s always possible to make things out of the software of your choice. It’s more of a preference, really. But from what I have made, After Effects is what made it possible to this intro, for me.

Good luck! If you ever make one, please link it here. I’d like to see what you achieve :)

You want to move the Red channel a few pixels horizontally and vertically. This will split the channels and create that RGB split effect.

your intro is super cool but obviously I can’t understand everything. if you could help me in 2 things…
for example the turbulent background comp thing – how exactly is it overlayed? is it matted?
and the blue thing that cover the logo, is that clouds just moving side to side with some distortion or are your clouds stationary and it’s just distortion sideways?

    ~thanks~

The turbulent background is just as you say, a matted layer of the logo composition. This will cut out the background that lies outside the logo’s current area.

Actually the blue glow you see in the middle is part of the particles video. The particles composition has a vignetting effect applied, so the edges of the composition gets darker than the middle. Plus I’ve played around with exposure etc to get it more visible in the middle.

Hope you understand what I’m saying :)

for the life of me I can’t figure out a good overlay for that blue distortion, or particles vid, as you say. tried different contrasts, curves, overlays and such… it probably seemed obvious to you but for some reason I fail at it…

p.s. good instructions, cool video. nice job

Well, it’s really how you set the whole thing up yourself. You gotta understand how things depend on each other and why you should go for this and that. I’d say you need to experiment with it until you understand the whole thing and why the final composition looks like it does.

          Good luck!

And for the record, I have done over 6 different versions of this just to understand the differences. Plus I have learned a lot by doing so. So if you start all over again, it only means you will understand After Effects even more :)

You’re on a good way! I can definitely see the resemblance of my how-to steps :) Keep working on it and you’ll eventually get there!

It’s just great!!! Better than the original :) And you provide the raw materials video?
If possible could you throw it to me in the mail for review. I work for a designer. I would like to do something like that.

      Thanks Andrew!

Are you saying that you want the raw video file, that one that was used when uploading to YouTube? Sure I can give you it. Please confirm, and I will give you a download link.

Hi, Gnasty, I see, that you make text guide, but it’s extremly hard to understand it because AE has over9000 of something settings, that must be adjusted =), may be you can do Video-tutorial?

An unfortunate incident occured a couple months ago, and that left me with no files at all. Shame on me who never made a backup… However, there is a chance that I still have at least one of the versions. I will see what I can find, and might as well make it downloaded!

As I said to Peter above you, I lost a couple of project files months ago. I am not sure if I still have this intro left, but if I do have it, I could make it downloadable :)
